This was the best banking product I ever used. Quicken cratered in 2018. Wish someone would get back to basics and forget the Cloud. So many places W/O access to Wi-Fi.
I am using Money Counts 9.0 in a virtual machine, I am having date problems. I have used Money Counts for years. It is best accounting software that I have used and I have used many over the years. When a new year is used, it is not closing the old year and posting entries to Net Worth and showing a zero balance in the new year expense and income accounts. Help!
Barbara Hamman, Did this problem only begin with this year? Mine automatically always does it correctly as soon as I post the first transaction in the new year.
Dan Shapiro, started a couple of years ago. It has not worked properly since it was installed in the virtual machine. I wish it worked properly. Could it be something with the virtual machine installation?
Barbara Hamman,
It is not closing into a new year because you have a transaction somewhere with a newer year, i.e. did you mistakenly post a transaction with a year in the future like 2026 for example when you meant to post it 2022? Search the registers for all the accounts the correct the entry back to where it should be.
There seems to be a lot of concern about continuing to use MoneyCounts on newer 64-bit operating systems.
I run MoneyCounts on Windows 10 and Windows 8.1, both 64-bit. My solution is to run a 32-bit OS as a virtual machine, using VMware Workstation Player. This is free from VMware.
The VMware Player "plays" the virtual machine (VM). The VM in this case will be a 32-bit OS (Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, 98, 95, etc.). Take your pick. I use Windows 2000 because it's small and efficient. You could even use DOS with Windows 3.1. That is what MoneyCounts was originally developed to run on.
The VMware solution obviates keeping an old machine around, just to run your accounting system.
I have been doing this for a few years, now. No problems. Works great.
I've used MCW 9.0 for decades and love it. Am needing to upgrade my computer to Windows 10 and hope to partition my hard drive so part is 10 and part is 7. Plan to keep MCW on the 7 side. Hope it works!
I have run "Money Counts" by Parson Technology for decades. I LOVE IT. I write my checks with it and it simultaniesly (sp) posts them to my books. I got a new machine with a 64 bit OS and it won't run MC9. HELP!!!
Have operated with Money Counts for about 35 years. Would like to continue; however, Windows 10 does not seem to be compatible. What was the last available update that might work?
Thank you for your help.
Shall hope to hear from you,

I also love and use MoneyCounts, specifically for our church as it allows fund accounting, I am continuing to use it on my Windows 10 by running "Oracle Virtual Box" software. It allows you to create a virtual machine that allows you to install a separate operating system, I use Windows 7, and I have very good results with this solution.
Money Counts is a great, simple accounting program. It's unfortunate that the developer has discontinued it. It is much easier to use than quick books or other programs I have used.
I purchased a copy from a site that sold discontinued software but it was on the old style disks not a cd. Fortunately, I still had a computer with the necessary drive that allowed me to copy the old disks onto a cd. Can't remember the name of the company that sold out of date software but I think I found it with a google search for out of date software.
You can buy an A drive that will plug into any usb port on your computer and the disks should work in that A drive. Most big office stores + Amazon.com carries it.
I have been running this program for years and I installed it on a Win 8.0 Pro 32-bit computer a month ago to test it. Ran fine. So I upgraded my desktop to Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit. I was installing MC9.0 and my floppy drive failed and took out disk 1 of the three disk installs. I tried file recovery programs and the disk is not readable.
When I archive to a new year, it creates a file 'mcwarcxx.001, xx is the last 2 digits of the year. I forgot how to expand the 'mcwarc14.00 in my case. Can you help me?
I started using it in 1990. It was a DOS program then. Sometime later it shifted to Windows and works well on WIN 7, but in 32bit mode. I still use it!!
I have MoneyCounts Windows 9.0, all three disks. I have been using it for years and years but I need to replace my XP Pro computer with a newer OS for various reasons. Do you know if a particular version of Windows 7 is needed to make MCW work? I was thinking about getting Windows 7 Pro but I read somewhere that the 64 bit version will not work with MCW. Is there a way to get Windows 7 Pro to emulate the 32 bit version so MCW would work with it?
"Is there a way to get Windows 7 Pro to emulate the 32-bit version so that MCW would work with it?" There is a way, but you will need to upgrade Windows 7 Pro to a higher level. I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate, and MoneyCounts works in the 32-bit Windows (which looks and feels like Win XP - not pretty, but it works). So I got a low-cost Win7 Asus PC box, which attaches to the back of a monitor, and I use that exclusively for MoneyCounts.
(The two PCs are networked, so transferring data and reports is easy. But a USB memory stick would work just as well).
I've used it for 20 years. It is a concise, no frills program. I like it. Annual archiving is still tricky and scary. And I can't use my mouse scroll, but those are my only complaints. It has served me well.
I have been using Money Counts accounting program for about 10 years---I think its the greatest! BUT--- it won't work on Windows 7. Do you have a program that will allow it to function on my new computer?
Money Counts 9.0 works fine on Windows 7 (32-bit). I have it installed on two Windows 7 Home 32-bit systems and two Windows 7 Pro 32-bit systems. You must be using 64-bit Win7.
